I’ll be at the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes in Rochester, Minnesota, on Sunday, helping raise money to aid in research for the cure for type 1 diabetes. This is personal for me; I am the parent of someone with type 1 diabetes. My daughter, Abby, was diagnosed when she was five. She is now a 20-year-old college student who wears an insulin pump and she will be walking with me, as will her dad.

If you don’t know anything about type 1 diabetes, then let me share something with you. This chronic condition, in which the body stops making insulin, is incurable and fatal if left unattended. Insulin is a necessary hormone that allows the body to process sugars in the foods we eat. Type 1 is not alleviated by diet and exercise; it is managed with insulin injections for the rest of the patient’s life. Frequent blood sugar tests, daily diet and exercise planning, and several visits per year to an endocrinologist are all part of what someone with type 1 diabetes must do to care for themselves. There are no days off.

As a parent, this has been a rough ride. But my daughter is the real hero here as she often manages her diabetes with grace and little fuss. It is for her, and the many, many other people who share this condition, that I walk.

If you would like to make a donation, here is the link to my page. I would be forever grateful. And your gift would touch many families facing the same struggle.

Thank you.
