Happy Thanksgiving from One Minnesota Writer

Updated: Jan 29

This is one of my favorite weeks of the year. It’s a week of honoring cooking traditions, like my family’s annual making of the fudge, as well as a week of feeling terribly lucky that so many of the people I care about most in the world live close by. Close enough to grace my dining room table.

The greatest thing about Thanksgiving as my partner and I celebrate it is its lack of stress. We make the day about good food and gratitude, shared with family or friends or maybe just each other depending on the year. There is no mad rush to buy gifts, no staying up late for the Black Friday sales that start in the wee hours, no stressing about perfection. We cook things that are familiar, warm, simple. We toast each other. We savor the knowledge that our incredible luck includes the fact that we have enough – we have a decent house, enough to eat, clothes to wear, cars that work. We aren’t fabulously wealthy and we don’t need to be. A simple life, an agreement on what’s important, and no desire to amass more stuff is how we arrived at this happy place.

I hope you all have a simple, peaceful, and happy Thanksgiving if that is a holiday you celebrate. And if it isn’t, give it a try. I can’t recommend it enough.

P.S. One more thing – a small request: My family and I are taking part in the Walk to End Hunger on Thanksgiving morning at the Mall of America. Ten hunger relief organizations collaborate to put on this event and money raised helps feed the hungry in the Twin Cities area. If you would like to make a small donation to my family’s team (Mickelson Family), here is the link:
